Brave Spirits Theater
Scenic Designer/Builder/Painter
Alexandra, VA 2019-2020 Director: Charlene V. Smith Brave Spirits Theater aimed to put on 8 of Shakespeare's Histories in rep over two years. Four of the shows premiered in 2019. My mission was to design one set for all 8 shows. For each show, the set was rearranged to reflect how strong and stable the power and mind of the king was compared to the previous one. It started with Richard the Second whose thrown is at its highest and the surrounding pallets feature a more symmetrical layout reflecting his more stable control over his power. As the next shows continue, the thrown becomes closer to the ground and the pallets start to separate representing cracks in the relationships around the king. The fabric behind the thrown was tied differently and different coat of arms were paced on the columns to show the king making the space his own. |
Unfortunately the shows did not experience their full two year run due to the pandemic. Only 4 of the 8 shows were able to perform and Brave Spirits Theater was forced to close during the pandemic.
