Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead explores the meaning of life for characters whose purpose is to move the plot forward and ultimately died in the end. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern (R and G) try to avoid their fate and become self aware, but no matter what they do, their fates are sealed. With this design, we wanted an environment that could move from order to chaos in the blink of an eye. The set with all its moving layers could form orderly arches or be arranged with a disfigured quality. At times the set would help drive the fate of the characters by either blocking an exit or revealing a new problem. This whimsical environment served as an ever changing void that the characters would only in the end find death.
