Avenue Q

Charge Artist
Forbes Center for the Performing Arts
Studio Theatre, April 2015

Director: Jonathan Martin
Scenic Designer: John Hobson

The concept for this production of Avenue Q was that the cast of a daytime puppet television show for kids was putting on an adult version of their show for audience members to come see at night. They scrapped together enough out-of-date scenic elements from storage, painted it kind of rough and put on a different kind of show from what some during the day.
As you can see in the process shots at the bottom of this page, we laid out the three different kinds of brick colors first. Tape was used to lay out the grout and was painted over with a mix of joint compound and paint. Next, the solid color on top was rolled and sponged on in some areas. Light spatters were then done over all the flats to add another layer to the dirty feeling.
